Almaty is the entry point and the reason most people come back a second time — the Tian Shan mountains rise directly behind the city, close enough that a morning coffee and an afternoon on a glacier are the same day. Wide Soviet-era boulevards, green parks, and a food scene that runs from plov to third-wave coffee.

Charyn Canyon, a half-day out of Almaty, is the detour everyone photographs and nobody regrets — red sandstone formations carved into narrow corridors, often (fairly) compared to a miniature Grand Canyon. Kolsai Lakes and Big Almaty Lake cover the alpine side: turquoise water, pine forest, and mountains close enough to touch.

Astana, the capital, is the other half of the country — Bayterek Tower, Norman Foster's Palace of Peace pyramid, and a skyline that was mostly open steppe thirty years ago. It reads as a different country from Almaty, and that contrast is part of the trip.

Beyond the cities, Kazakhstan is still the world's ninth-largest country by land and mostly empty — yurts on green steppe, nomadic families who still move with the seasons, and a scale of landscape that is hard to describe without seeing it.
